In the realm of youth sports, milestones often come in the form of personal bests, team victories, and championship titles. However, for 10-year-old Ben Cheatham, a budding baseball enthusiast, the latest achievement is one that combines athletic prowess with innovation:
Ben has become the first amateur athlete to create game-certified Stat Legend cards.
The concept of game-certified sports cards is a new one. Athletes play in a sports event while carrying their sports cards with them. The cards get dirty, bent, grimy, sweaty and that is part of the fun. Then, after the game, the player signs the cards and seals them as a forever collectible item.
The idea of game-certified sports cards first took off with Bobby Witt Jr., the Royals superstar. Witt's initiative, highlighted in a recent New York Times article, showcases the growing trend of merging sports achievements with collectible cards.
But what makes Ben Cheatham’s story remarkable is how it brings this concept to the grassroots level, offering young athletes a way to celebrate and preserve their sports moments just like the pros.
Pioneering the Future of Youth Sports Memorabilia
Ben’s journey with Stat Legend began as a typical enthusiastic youth athlete's story. Passionate about baseball, he sought ways to not only improve his game but also to document his progress and share it with friends and family. Stat Legend was the perfect way to do this.
But on DATE, Ben took his collecting of Stat Legend cards to another level. Ben placed three of his Stat Legend cards in his back pocket prior to taking the field against his opponent. The game was a good one but the events after the game were even better.
After the game, Ben removed the cards from his pocket. The cards were bent, creased, dirty and game certified, just like he wanted. Ben then pulled out a permanent marker and signed each card. The cards were then placed in a hard case and sealed with an official “Stat Legend Game-Certified” sticker.
How to Create Your Own Game-certified Cards
Other youth athletes can get their game-certified cards certified too. Here’s how it works:
- Game Time: Carry the cards with you at your game. Put them in a pocket, or a shoe, or a hat. The cards are going to get beat up and dirty. That's the fun!
- Post-Game Personalization: After the game, you need a permanent marker. Sign each card. We recommend personalizing the card. Do you have a saying or a motto or a nickname? Use that. Also, number each card. So if you have 3 game-certified cards, sign them 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3.
- Capture the Moment: Have someone take a picture of you holding the cards.
- Share and Tag: Post the photo to social media and tag Stat Legend, or just email the photo to contact@statlegend.com.
- Certification: Stat Legend will then mail you a game-certified baseball card case and sticker. Put the card in the case and apply the sticker. Now you have a game-certified card.
- Hall of Fame: If you really want to brag about your new collector's item, take a picture of the finished product and send it to Stat Legend. They will then put it in the Virtual Game certified Card Hall of Fame (under construction).
Looking Ahead
The success of Ben Cheatham’s game-certified cards marks a significant step in Stat Legend’s mission to make youth sports more engaging and rewarding. As more young athletes like Ben begin to create and cherish their own sports cards, the culture of youth sports will likely see a shift towards greater appreciation of individual achievements.
In the words of Stat Legend’s founders, there is currently no "Strava for youth athletes." Stat Legend is poised to fill this gap, offering a platform where young sports enthusiasts can track, celebrate, and immortalize their achievements. For Ben Cheatham, this milestone is just the beginning. His journey, captured through game-certified cards, will inspire countless other young athletes to dream big, play hard, and celebrate every victory along the way.
